Deano's Jalapenos 2010 Scovie Award Winner

2010 SCOVIE AWARDS RECOGNIZES DEANO'S JALAPENOS FOR PRODUCT EXCELLENCE

(November 19, 2009)  When the results of the 2010 Scovie Awards, the world's leading recognition for hot and spicy products, were announced, Doehne Duckworth of Ranch Camp Chip Company was excited to get the call from the competition organizers. This is the first Scovie Award win for the Stowe-based company, which manufactures

Deano’s Jalapenos Jalapeno Chips. In the industry's most rigorous blind tastings, a panel of the country's top culinary experts sampled hundreds of the world's most lauded gourmet foods, and the top scoring products each won a coveted Scovie banner.

Deano's Jalapeno Chips, cheddar flavor, took first place in the 'Unique Snack Food' category.  Over 600 products from around the world competed for top honors.  The Scovie Awards were created by Dave DeWitt, the nation's leading author on fiery cuisine and founder of the National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show. The awards are named for Wilbur Scoville who pioneered a rating scale for spicy foods.  The Scovie Awards have become the industry standard for excellence in more than 60 categories of fiery foods.

"This year's entrants really represented the cream of the crop in fiery foods products," notes Dave DeWitt, dubbed by The New York Times as the "Pope of Peppers."   "Our 2010 winners represent some of the largest companies in the industry, such as Pace Foods, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Garden Fresh Salsa, as well as start-up companies just getting off the ground.  The common factor is their commitment to excellence and the real quality of the products they produce."

DeWitt was also pleased with the geographic diversity of the winners.  "This year, our winners represent companies from 32 different states and countries and provinces as diverse as Panama, Australia, Japan, Antigua and Canada," lauds DeWitt.  "Scovie winners truly exemplify the diversity and quality of this industry."

The Grand Prize winner was Pleasant Valley Kitchen Company in the tasting division with their habanero hot sauce entry, Sugar & Spice Sweet Sauce.  The top award in Advertising and Marketing went to Toluca Gourmet, a first-time Scovie entrant.

Many of the Scovie award winning products, as well as thousands of other products, will be available to both trade buyers and consumers at the 22st Annual National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show, March 5-7, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM.  For information on exhibiting in the National Fiery Foods Show, call 505-873-8680, or visit www.fiery-foods.com.

Stowe firm wins global food award

A small but spicy snack made in Stowe won big honors at the 2010 Scovie Awards, a worldwide contest for hot and spicy products. Ranked No. 1 for "most unique" spicy snack food of the year are the jalapeno chips made by Deano's Jalapenos. Deano's competed against more than 600 other products for top honors. In blind tastings, a panel of the country's top culinary experts sampled hundreds of gourmet foods in selecting the Scovie winners. Deano's Jalapeno chips involve no potatoes; rather, they're made from fresh jalapeno pepers that are sliced paper-thin, deep fried to a spicy crisp, and given a dusting of sharp cheddar. The chips, which debuted last May, are the brainchild of Cactus Cafe owner Doehne "Deano" Duckworth. He noticed that jalapeno-flavored potato chips were becoming more popular, and thought: Why not skip the potato part and make chips out the jalapenos themselves? He used the Cactus Café as a tasting ground, with many customers acting as testers and food critics as he worked on the recipe. "We never expected to win an award of this caliber just nine months after going to market," Duckworth said. Duckworth and his chips will be in Albuquerque, N.M., in March for the 22nd annual National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show, organized by the same people who sponsor the Scovie Awards. Deano's Jalapenos are handmade in small batches at the Cactus Café, and are sold in 2.5-ounce bags at Stowe Beverage, Harvest Market, Alpine Mart, Edelweiss Mountain Deli, JK Adams, Cactus Café, and online at deanosjalapenos.com. They are distributed through Vermont Roots and Capital Candy.
